about hydro plunge

As a kid, I was a huge Kobe Bryant fan—I idolized his every move, but more than that, I was a sponge for his ‘Mamba Mentality’, grit, and sheer desire to be the best at the game. Fast forward 25+ years and I found myself at a loss when Kobe—my idol—passed away. I wanted to find a way to honor him and all of the lessons he taught me through the game.

I signed up for my first half Ironman triathlon in Santa Cruz, fueled by Kobe. I couldn’t stop there. I rounded up a group of friends and signed up for a full Ironman triathlon and spent the better half of a year preparing for a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. After a few knee and ankle injuries due to overuse, I searched for methods to help me regain strength. I tried it all—acupuncture, physical therapy, compression boots, sports tape, and finally cold plunging. Cold plunging personally helped me with inflammation, post-work out soreness, but mostly, dialing into my mental strength—after all, I was jumping into an almost freezing tub of water for 3+ minutes.

Filling my bathtub with water and 30 pounds of ice after each long training session started to get expensive. Seeking another way to sustain this recovery method, I did my research and converted a chest freezer into a cold plunge. My friends started asking me to build them their own, which is when I decided to find alternative ways to plunge. I dialed in a few ideal builds—and from there, hydro plunge was started.
